Kaylee Schmidt and her fiancé Orion Metheny have been dating for five years. There was just one major point of contention between them: Metheny was never a fan of pets.
Metheny like animals but isn’t sure he wants any of his own. Schmidt, on the other hand, had grown up with cats and was dreading moving out of her family’s house when they ultimately married since she’d have to leave her beloved family cat Nala behind.
She had no idea, however, that her fiancé had a plan.
Schmidt — now Schmidt-Metheny — told The Dodo, “He understood I was heartbroken to be leaving Nala.” “I’ve mentioned wanting a cat once we were married. He realized how much joy a cat would offer me, as well as how much simpler the move would be. So the wedding day felt like the ideal occasion.”
Metheny thought it was fate when he learned about a little cat that had been abandoned and discovered wandering about their neighborhood. He decided to adopt the small cat, subsequently named Chloe, and present her to his future bride on their wedding day. He couldn’t have been more enthusiastic when he informed their photographer, Megan O’Dell of Wild and Wonderful Photography, about his idea.
On the wedding day, O’Dell prepped the pair for their “first look” pictures, in which they would see each other suited up immediately before the ceremony. O’Dell assured Schmidt-Metheny that Metheny had a surprise for her while she waited.
“I have to admit that a part of me hoped for an animal, but I didn’t believe it would happen,” Schmidt-Metheny said. “When we talked about having a cat in the past, Orion seemed a little hesitant. Plus, I couldn’t hear any creatures making noises while I was still turned around, so I assumed the surprise was something else.”
Schmidt-Metheny finally turned around, and she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her fiancé carrying Chloe.
“I believe the first thing I said was ‘Shut up!’” — I was really taken aback and couldn’t believe he was carrying a kitten,” Schmidt-Metheny added. “Then I felt tearful because I realized this was our kitty to keep!”Schmidt-Metheny’s face went from shock …
… to pure delight in a matter of seconds as she and her future husband snuggled their new family member.
Schmidt-Metheny was pleased to have a kitten to begin their new life with, and tiny Chloe seemed to be equally ecstatic about her new parents.
Schmidt-Metheny described Chloe as “quiet and affectionate.” “Which is odd to think of today, because she is always rowdy and active!”
Following the photographs, the couple temporarily separated from Chloe in order to marry, but they were ecstatic to bring her home later and begin their new life with her. Chloe has settled in beautifully in her new home, and her parents can’t picture living without her.
“She’s overjoyed,” Schmidt-Metheny stated. “Both Orion and I enjoy playing with her, and she’s been a wonderful addition to our small family!”
